Micro-cogeneration unit, of the German company called Vaillant, with the internal combustion piston engine powered by natural gas, is an ideal solution for not only family houses but also for large apartments of flats or businesses. A combined production of electricity and heat (CHP – Combined Heat and Power) brings significant savings in energy and heating costs. A combined production (i.e. KVET) is currently supported in a form of green bonuses for an electricity production in the Czech Republic.

How does the cogeneration unit work?

The heart of the cogeneration unit is the internal combustion piston engine which is commonly found in cars, cutting machines, motorcycles or boats. The engine is specially modified and adapted to the natural gas and while it is running, it drives a generator which produces the electricity. Under normal circumstances the exhaust gases of high temperature would exit to the atmosphere as for example from cars. However, a special heat exchanger is a component of the cogeneration unit which removes the heat from flue gases and forwards it to the heating water. Flue gases leave the unit at a very low temperature and thus the potential of the natural gas is maximally utilized.

Why is cogeneration so useful?

People need electricity and heat to live. In the vast majority we obtain the electricity from the grid. Thermal energy can be received from different ways, e.g. district heating from heating plants, own gas boiler or solid fuel boiler, heat pump. In most modern coal-fired plants the electricity is produced with the efficiency of 40%, the rest is a loss. For domestic gas boilers the real efficiency is between 80–90%. For cogeneration units you join the production of both into one device which operates with the efficiency of over 90%.

To fulfil your needs your domestic cogeneration consumes significantly less fuel and above all - you produce your own energy at the location where it is consumed – therefore there are no costs of electricity or heat transmission. The cogeneration unit works wherever the natural gas is available and heat consumption is assured.

Government subsidy of cogeneration

In the long term, cogeneration is considered to be the most meaningful transformation of energy and therefore it is also supported by the government. Why don’t want you to get government subsidy because of your own cheaper energy production?

The green bonus for electricity from micro-cogeneration is set for 2014 as 2.1CZK/kWh.

Ideal in a combination with PV

Do you have a photovoltaic plant? If yes, then you know that during summer you are virtually self-sufficient in terms of electricity. However in winter your PV does not produce enough electricity to run the house. You can only dream of the heating from PV. There is the ideal space for a cogeneration unit.

It gives you enough heat for the heating of your house and on top of that it produces electricity instead of PV. At the end you get paid by the state (i.e. green bonuses) for operating the cogeneration unit.
